Our thanks to John Ostlund and Jim Roberts of KYNO, Fresno California, for sharing this special program broadcast on September 1, 2008. |
TOP STREAM 32Kbps (10KHz) KYNO Boss Look Back, Part One, September 1, 2008 (55:59) . . . Boss Radio! The Big 13 . . . [Description by Uncle Ricky]
John Ostlund grew up in central California, listening to KFRC in San Francisco and KYNO in Fresno. He ran an advertising agency for years, then purchased KJWL-FM in Fresno. But it was always his dream to own KYNO, and when the opportunity came along in 2008, he took it. To celebrate the station's great history and introduce a return to english-language talk programming, he asked his Production Manager Jim Roberts to create a KYNO Tribute special, which was broadcast on September 1, 2008. Hour 1 leads off with a 1968 aircheck of Johnny Scott (aka Bobby Ocean, who also appears in his 2008 personna), followed by an interview with John Ostlund, followed by a 1971 aircheck of his Boss Jock brother, Ron Sherman. Nick Anthony is featured before a montage of classic KYNO contest promotional announcements, including the KYNO Millionaire and the first part of an interview with 1963 PD Bill Drake. The airchecks are all partially (if not totally) 'scoped, but some full-length tunes are included, too. Some airchecks have appeared previously on REELRADIO. (Our thanks to KYNO for the REELRADIO promo, heard in this hour.) Also featured: Pete McNeal, Dirk Robinson, long-time Fresno newsman John Wallace and even some pre-Drake jingles. |

As if a short interview with Gene Chenault wasn't enough, this awesome hour opens with some boss samples of Bob Taylor in 1967, and closes with Sean Conrad from "the early seventies". The BIG payoff in this boss bonanza is Sam Schwann. Here's an "old-timer" that was as good as gold for the 1972 KYNO silver Anniversary. Were they celebrating their original sign-on in 1947? Whatever, Schwann is totally casual but he cannot be ignored. The very helpful Dirk Robinson understands Sam's "star quality". A GREAT listen! The airchecks are all partially (if not totally) 'scoped, but three full-length tunes are included, too. There are some pre-Drake jingles in this hour as well. |

TOP STREAM 32Kbps (10KHz) KYNO Boss Look Back, Part Three, September 1, 2008 (56:01) . . . we will not stoop to operating in this manner . . . [Description by Uncle Ricky]
This hour is a true blockbuster in KYNO history. The TC (Talent Count) is OFF THE SCALE with Superstar Bobby Ocean in his early role as Johnny Scott introducing The Johnny Mann Singers at the top, and the second part of the Bill Drake interview and Rick Allen with his recollection of a botched 1976 Big Guy phone call and a fine finale. But that's just the beginning and the end. The stuff in the sandwich includes Mike Novak, Gary Mitchell (aka Al Vanik), Rich Carter, Ted Jordan, Les Garland, Jerry Mann, Johnny Hall and Bill Drake. There's a very long segment of High School Football Teams Jingles (PAMS?) These are pre-Drake (obviously) but they represent the cash and content that KYNO invested in the local community. After all, before and after Boss, there was The Audience. And there's a REELRADIO promo in this hour as well. There are also TWO (just 2) reportable music performances in this hour. |

. . . This is the twentieth century, the agonies and ecstasies of 68 years . . . [Description by Uncle Ricky]
The last hour opens with a classic New Year Promo and KYNO New Year's Greetings from a bushel of Boss Jocks. Chris Van Camp and Dave Roberts perform some classic 'scoped Boss radio, then Harry Miller takes center stage. Following Steve Randall/Reynolds and his comments on QRK turntables, we are treated to a rare five minutes of Dale Dorman. Dave Jeffries caps the hour. Our friend Jim Roberts was producer and narrator. Another REELRADIO promo in this hour! We are so pleased! And there are also SIX reportable music performances. REELRADIO is also included prominently in the closing credits, along with those who helped produce this tribute to KYNO on September 1, 2008. |
