Soundtrack Of The 60's was a three-hour weekly, syndicated radio show developed by Watermark for Murray The K (Murray Kaufman). The show presented music in thematic groupings of songs, a favorite presentation style of Kaufman.

Kaufman was diagnosed with cancer in 1981, and Gary Owens had assumed host duties for this program from March, 1981. Owens eventually became the full-time host of the show which continued past Kaufman's death.

Owens was born Gary Altman on May 10, 1936 in Mitchell, South Dakota. He worked in Los Angeles Radio and TV for over 30 years, including the trendsetting NBC program, Laugh In. He hosted a show for Music Of Your Life and voiced more than 3,000 cartoons, including Roger Ramjet and Batman. He wrote for for the series Rocky & Bullwinkle and collaborated with his friend Jonathan Winters on three comedy CDs.

A diabetic from the age of eight, Owens succumbed to complications of the disease and passed away on February 12, 2015. He was 80 years of age.

These programs were pre-scripted, of course, but Gary Owens was a writer, after all, and it sounds as if he had some latitude to work his trademark humor into the script.

Part One includes comments from Paul McCartney, who talks about his favorites from the Abbey Road LP, and TV Guide critic Cleveland Amory who misses old 1950's TV shows.

Part Three features Smokey Robinson who says getting started as The Miracles and forming Motown records wasn't easy.

And, Soundtrack Of The 60's takes it to the streets with comments from the demographically-appropriate about their most memorable romantic moment of the Sixties.
